I am always amazed at how much contrast and texture appears in all neutral compositions. These small (3″ x 3″) collages were all made from the little scraps of vintage papers that usually cover my work table (and floor) — the pieces I can’t bring myself to throw away. They tend to be neutral since I have an obsession with old papers. My love of typography also shows up in these pieces.

This piece is the final in a series that began as one single image. After my initial completion, I simply hated it. Just before throwing it away, I tried saving this piece from the rest and ended up liking the rest of it cut smaller.

I created this mixed-media abstract collage from the pile of scraps on my worktable. I was determined to develop a balanced composition without digging out any new vintage papers or scraps. It was created on a page in my sketchbook. The authoritative building and court documents used in the layout help determine the name of the piece.
